Most dining halls and mess services run on paper tallies and end-of-day guesswork. Kitchens over-cook to stay safe, run short mid-line when they do not, and lose the count entirely the moment the internet drops. Dietary and religious restrictions get tracked, if at all, on sticky notes at the counter.
At the scale of a university hostel, that costs in three directions at once:
- Wasted food, because prep is based on a rough headcount rather than on confirmed meals.
- Mid-service shortages, because the kitchen has no reliable per-item number before service starts.
- Lost accountability, because a network outage means falling back to paper and reconciling the counts afterwards.
Underneath all of it sits a trust problem. Every outage and every shortage costs standing with students as much as it costs money.
